A free software simulator to practice PID auto-tuning
My previous article shared some auto-tuning procedures for commercially available PID controllers/thermostats, all of which require actual hardware. Therefore, costs must be invested to set up the basic experimental setup.
This article provides the software simulator provided by NI LabWindows/CVI-PID Toolbox, which can perform PID auto-tuning training for free.
A mathematical model suitable for general industrial control applications is provided. By adjusting the parameters of the model, it can simulate the response of the real control object. Adjustable parameters include system response time, delay time, gain value, ambient noise level, etc.
Engineers can practice the PID gain automatic tuning process repeatedly, and observe the adjusted system response in real time. The simulator also provides the manual tuning function, allowing to simultaneously observe the system response after any PID gain adjustment. According to my experience, engineers generally need less than 1 hour to understand and learn the PID auto-tuning function.
